lorient three

timescale

The first action in the transformation of the bunkers would be the removal of substantial parts of the massive concrete roof, allowing the introduction of natural light into the core of the structures. Openings would be formed in fifteen metre wide strips corresponding to the cell dimensions of the bunkers running with the grain of the cells in the case of K1 and K2, and across the grain of the cells in K3. The length of the strips shown varies from twenty-two metres up to ninety five-metres. The cut edges of these new openings would reveal the layered construction of the bunker roofs and would act as 'reveals' reflecting light down into the cells below. Eight cells out of a total of twenty would remain un-altered. The study model indicates the quality of light which could be achieved with these new openings. Functions would be housed in new enclosures built both within and on top of the existing bunkers . Each of the three main buildings would have lift and stair access to all levels including the roofs. In addition building K2 will have a new external stepped ramp to allow public pedestrian and restricted vehicle access onto the roof of the building.
