Conversion of the Palla Textile Factory_Glauchau_Saxony

The project is respectful of the substantial qualities of the existing building fabric. It takes as its subject these existing structures and the programmatic brief outlined by the town. The town's intentions for the site seem well matched to the existing building stock availible. The project proposes a degree of demolition to open up some of the spaces around the existing factory buildings and these are seen as potentially significant new public spaces for the town. The main architectural proposal, beyond the upgrading of the existing older, taller buildings which surround the site, is the utilisation of the roof of the former weaving sheds as an active, renewable energy source. The floors of the former workspaces are also remade to render them suitable for the support of new youth orientated sports, leisure and cultural uses.
